Director of Advising
The Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design (MIAD) is seeking applications for the position of
Director of Advising. This position provides leadership in a holistic, developmental
advising process based on a dynamic student-advisor relationship that enables students
to integrate their interests and abilities with MIAD’s academic programs.

Summary of Responsibilities:
Oversees the advising process, assigns and maintains the advisee/advisor lists,
prepares the annual advising calendar and advising materials, participates in enrollment
management activities, provides advisor training and development, conducts on-going
assessment efforts and develops and executes programs for students related to
academic and career advising. The director works with the Dean of Students, Executive
Director of Advising and Career Services and Vice President for Academic Affairs to
identify and implement innovative models and programs, develops policies and offers
support to advisors and departments.

Specific Responsibilities Include, but not Limited to:
Lead advisors and provide resources, support and training to advising team; Update and
maintain online advising resources; Serve as chair of the Advisory Council for Advising
and Registration; Work with Vice President of Academic Affairs and the Department
Chairs with college’s inquiry-based advising model; In collaboration with faculty and staff,
develop initiatives that enable students to reach the college’s learning outcomes; Support
at-risk students; Serve as advisor for first year and transfer students as needed; In
conjunction with Registrar, assist in the planning and delivery of course registration,
faculty grading reports and student completion of program of study; Work with Career
Services to further develop advising that helps students connect studio/academic classes
with career/professional options; Organize, develop and lead majors and minors events;
Assist with new student orientation; Submit information for parent communications;
Maintain productive relationships with representatives of numerous departments and
offices at college; Participate in professional advising organizations and events.

Master’s degree in Higher Education/Student Affairs, Counseling, Education or related
field; Strong preference for candidates with at least four years advising experience in a
higher education setting.

Preferred Qualifications, Skills, Knowledge, Abilities:
Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to academic and career advising;
Knowledge of academic advising and career development issues and trends within
higher education ; Strong advising/counseling skills; Ability to work with a diverse
population of students, staff and faculty; Ability to work effectively as a member of a team
as well as individually; Functional literacy in Microsoft Office applications including Excel,
Word, and PowerPoint; Working knowledge of or ability to learn and use web based
information sources; Effective oral and written communication skills for interacting with
faculty, staff and students; Ability to manage and successfully prioritize multiple tasks
and projects; Working knowledge of challenges and opportunities in a studio based
education program; Ability to function effectively with ambiguity and transition in an
environment of academic program evolution; Experience in an art/design higher
education setting.
