Introduction (Description of School/College/Dept/Program) The College of Engineering & Applied Science at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee invites applications for an Academic Advisor position working with the Office of Student Services in the College of Engineering & Applied Science, University of Wisconsin Milwaukee. This is a 2 FTE recruitment as the college is looking to fill two Academic Advisor positions.

Job Summary
Job Summary:
Engages students in decision making processes and promotes appropriate and responsible choices on academic matters such as admission, course selection and degree requirements. Maintains appropriate confidentiality, updates student advising records, and contributes to the development and delivery of academic advising related events and programs. Works to ensure students receive accurate, timely, and holistic advising services in support of promoting student success, retention, and program completion. Strives to create a welcoming, equitable, and inclusive work environment.

Duties Include:

    • Serves as a main point of contact for students and provides information about educational options and academic requirements; assists with identifying and assessing interests, skills, and values to match appropriate field of study/career options. Refers students to appropriate institutional resources. Advising is done in-person, by phone, on Teams, and email.
    • Maintains expertise with advised curriculum and may assist in developing and recommending exceptions for policy and curriculum
    • Maintains appropriate confidentiality, updates student advising records and processes and responds to academic inquiries according to established institutional and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) policies.
    • Implements academic advising related events and programs such as workshops, panel discussions and guest speakers.
    • Participates in the campus-wide advising community providing input to leadership regarding the development of advising, recruitment, and co/curricular programs offered by the school/college.
Minimum salary for this position is $50,000/annual however, the final salary offer for the final candidate will be contingent upon the knowledge, skills, and abilities demonstrated throughout the screening process.
Minimum Qualifications
  • One year of experience in student services or a closely related field
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite (ex: Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams)
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree
  • Experience of college academic advising
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain relationships with diverse constituents, such as students, parents, faculty, staff, corporate partners, etc.
  • Excellent organization skills, including evidence of being able to prioritize and utilize good time management practices
  • Evidence of an ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Evidence of exceptional communication skills (interpersonal, written, and public speaking)
