Job details This is a twelve-month position that reports to the Associate Dean in the College of Letters and Sciences. This position provides direct advising to students and strategically supports faculty advisors in fully online programs, the social sciences and humanities, and other high-demand or high-need areas. This position will assist with recruitment and orientation events as well as retention and student success initiatives.
Required Qualifications
  • Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution
  • Two years of experience in an education setting
  • Excellent written, verbal, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to inclusive practices to ensure student success
Preferred characteristics
  • Experience as an academic advisor in a higher education setting
  • Experience working with online students and/or students in the humanities or social sciences
  • Experience working with at-risk students
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills and professionalism in communicating with faculty, staff, students, families/guests, and the general public
  • Career development facilitator training and/or Global Career Development Facilitator certification; knowledge of career development theory and practices

responsibilities 75% Academic Advising and Student Success

  • Provide advising support to students across the College of Letters & Sciences with a primary focus on students in the humanities and social sciences
  • Collaborate with faculty advisors across the college to provide advising to students with College of Letters & Sciences majors
  • Communicate with prospective students to offer advice and information on requirements and opportunities at UW-Whitewater
  • Support students in the process of preparing for and applying to professional schools and provide guidance as they face the realities of competitive professional program admission processes
  • Utilize Navigate and other campus technologies to maintain records and collaborate with other campus units to support student success
  • Advise new students at Student Orientation, Advising, and Registration (SOAR) events
  • Collaborate with campus partners to ensure holistic student advising and support
  • Assist in supporting students in fully online degree programs
  • Assist in supporting at-risk students
  • Assist in supporting transfer students

25% Administrative Duties

  • Participate in Preview Days, Admitted Student Days, and recruitment events
  • Coordinate College re-enrollment efforts
  • Collaborate with the First Year Experience Office to maintain online orientation modules
  • Co-coordinate College of Letters & Sciences Jumpstart programming
  • Assist in maintaining and updating four-year plans, College of Letters & Sciences advising website, program lists, and College of Letters & Sciences Advising Office publications in collaboration with others in the College of Letters & Sciences Advising Office
  • Other duties as assigned
