Position Summary: Serve as the Academic Advisor to a caseload of approximately 80 students who are members of the UW Oshkosh Student Support Services (SSS) program. The SSS program serves 300 UW Oshkosh students annually. SSS students are first-generation college (parents have not earned a baccalaureate degree) students and/or students whose family income meets federally established guidelines. Students with a documented disability may also be served by the program. The goal of SSS is to increase the college persistence and graduation rates of the students it serves. SSS is one of the U.S. Department of Education funded TRIO programs.
50% Provide support for an assigned caseload of student participants in the areas of academic advising, life skills development, student success development, career planning, financial literacy, and financial aid and scholarship assistance. Encourage students to participate fully in the college experience including study abroad, internship opportunities and consideration of graduate school.
1. Assess student needs and develop an individualized student success plan. Monitor student progress employing developmental, proactive, and appreciative academic advising methods.
2. Monitor student grades, grade-point averages, and progress towards graduation.
3. Refer SSS students to other service providers on campus such as the Center for Academic Resources, Financial Aid, Registrar, Student Accounts, Counseling Center, Reading/Study Center, Disability Services, Project Success, etc.
4. Maintain detailed and accurate records of student contacts. Assist in updating and maintaining student files as required by federal and institutional regulations.
25% Assist in the development and implementation of project services under the direction of the program director and in collaboration with the other SSS/SSS STEM staff members.
1. Keep current with trends and knowledge in the fields of student success programs.
2. Employ best practices and success strategies in the design, implementation, and assessment of the SSS/SSS STEM program components.
3. In collaboration with SSS/SSS STEM colleagues, develop, provide overall direction to, and evaluate either the SSS/SSS STEM Learning Groups for first-year students or the Peer Mentoring program for second-year students. Assure seamless transition between the two components. Train and provide direction and guidance to student employees serving as Learning Group Leaders or Peer Mentors. Be present at Learning Group or Peer Mentor activities and events.
4. Create, implement, conduct, and assess academic workshops, activities, and events for SSS/SSS STEM students. * During the academic year, evening hours on a weekly basis may be required. Evening hours during the summer and weekend hours during both the academic year and summer on an occasional basis are required.
10% Recruit eligible students into the program and obtain documentation to verify program eligibility.
5% Advocate for first-generation and limited-income students.
5% Communicate and collaborate with the campus community. Serve on campus committees and participate in campus events and activities.
5% Perform other duties as assigned by the SSS/SSS STEM director.
Required: Bachelor’s degree.

Professional advising and counseling experience working with students who are first-generation and/or who come from income eligible families.

Commitment to delivery of high-quality academic advising to meet the needs and characteristics of a diverse college student population.

Demonstrated exceptional interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.

Demonstrated ability to communicate and work effectively with students, faculty and staff.

Demonstrated experience teaching or coaching student success techniques and self-advocacy to college students.

Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.


Preferred: Master’s degree in counseling, education, or a related discipline.

Demonstrated knowledge of and/or experience with Student Support Services and/or TRIO programs.

Demonstrated ability with designing, developing, implementing, conducting, and assessing educational programs.

Professional experience working with higher education programs specifically with ethnically diverse student populations.

Bilingual in Spanish or Hmong.
