Associate Director of Advising

Position Summary

The Associate Provost of Undergraduate Education (APUE) University Advising Unit is seeking two Associate Directors for Advising. The Associate Directors report to the Director of Advising and will assist with the design and implementation of programmatic initiatives for undergraduate students and advisors. The candidates will supervise a team of academic advisors in alignment with an academic interest area and will have a minimal advising caseload. This role will participate in unit, university-wide, and student success committees. They will perform advanced-level academic advisement functions such as facilitating academic program development, advisement, interpretation, and implementation of university policies and procedures. The Associate Directors must use professional judgment to make decisions about undergraduate students’ academic standing.

Duties:

Supervision and Leadership

  • Perform supervisory duties such as hiring, evaluating advisors, and training them based on university policies, procedures, and technological systems related to academic advisement.
  • Play a leadership role in monitoring and tracking the retention, progression, and graduation of all undergraduate students within the assigned population.
  • Represent academic advising units on college and University committees.
  • Coordinate and communicate with faculty on academic program changes or updates.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities that maintain knowledge and expertise in MSU policies and procedures that impact student success.

Administration and Assessment

  • Evaluate and advise on academic programs and the academic progress of undergraduate students.
  • Review student petitions for readmission and reinstatement for exploratory preference major.
  • Review and make decisions on recess, dismissal, withdrawal, and reinstatement.
  • Review and make academic decisions on exceptions to policy regarding semester enrollment limits, repeat exception limits, and general education exceptions.
  • Develop and track metrics regarding student advisement and academic progress toward degree completion, major declaration, and student engagement.

Student Success

  • May teach or co-teach Undergraduate Studies (UGS) courses for first- and second- year students which may include course planning.
  • Lead and create curriculum for student success seminars and workshops in connection with academic interest areas.
  • Advise a cohort of undergraduate students.
  • Collaborate with colleges to ensure advisors are up to date on college and departmental requirements.
  • Collaborate with colleges to identify programmatic barriers across interest areas influencing persistence and retention.
  • Perform admissions and recruitment functions for the unit.

Perform other related duties as assigned.

The pay for these positions will range from $70,000-$80,000 per year.

Masters

Minimum Requirements

Master’s degree and 3-5 years of supervisory/management experience; or a combination of training and advising experience.
