Job Summary The Sheldon B. Lubar School of Business at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee seeks applications for an Academic Advisor in Student Services.

The primary responsibility is the advisement of prospective and currently enrolled undergraduate Business students in the Lubar School. Additionally, the incumbent will have a focus in recruitment [freshmen & transfer] and retention. Specific duties/tasks are very numerous and wide-ranging. Advise all undergraduate Lubar major curriculums, certificate programs, Business minors, and second degree students. This position will also provide staff assistance to the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs.

Job Duties: Advise Business and prospective Business undergraduate students on issues related to admission, registration (course selection), and graduation (program requirements). Specific areas are numerous and wide-ranging. Advise all undergraduate Lubar major curriculums, certificate programs, Business minors, and second degree students. Be aware of program modifications, waivers, substitutions, data collection and compilation and issues related to student performance and academic progression. Work in conjunction with student records administrator to clear students for graduation. Additionally, s/he will work closely with the student success initiatives to increase retention and graduation rates in the UWM Lubar School of Business.

The Advisor will guide students in:
• Developing strategies to assist students in academic difficulty
• College or University initiatives designed to increase student success/retention
• Referral to various university services as needed (e.g., Tutoring, Career Development, Accessibility Resource Center, Norris Health Center)

The Advisor will act as a liaison with department/program administrators regarding:
• Updating curricular information to students
• Evaluating student standing in programs
• Program modifications, waivers, substitutions, data collection, compilation, issues related to student performance, and academic progression

Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to, assignments & project work as required. The advisor will also provide back-up for other advising staff in the area of non-routine advising as needed. Given the extended hours of the Student Services Center, some evening and weekend hours will be required.

Minimum Qualifications Required qualifications include a Bachelor’s Degree and minimally one year related experience in student affairs working with ethnically diverse college or university populations. Also necessary is proficiency with integrated student information systems/technologies for advisement, and demonstrated knowledge of undergraduate advisement strategies.
Preferred Qualifications Preferred qualifications include a Master’s Degree and evidence of excellent planning, organizational and customer service skills, and excellent oral and written communication including effective public speaking skills. Also beneficial is demonstrated ability to take initiative, exercise sound judgment, and handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment, as well as the ability to think strategically and develop collaborative relationships within a large diverse organizational structure and culture. Preference will be given to candidates with experience advising students in AACSB curriculum.
