Academic Skills Specialist

Position Description:
• 70% - As the Academic Skills Specialist, this person will meet with students who are requesting or who have been referred for individual assistance in building academic success strategies. Through the facilitation of peer meetings, outreach sites, credited courses, and individual meetings, the Academic Skills Specialist assists students with academic preparedness for university-level work—discussing college success issues such as time management, textbook comprehension, test preparation/test-taking skills, note-taking skills, reading or writing comprehension, and campus resource education.
• 20% - As the Academic Skills Specialist, this person will also work closely with the Tutoring In Math and Science (TIMS) Coordinator. This person will assist in the training and supervision of TIMS program student employees. This person will also work with the TIMS Coordinator to ensure program quality and efficacy.
• 10% - As the Technology Tutoring Coordinator, this person will coordinate all aspects of the technology tutoring program including staffing, assessment, and the SGA funding proposal.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
70% Academic Skills Specialist
• Meeting with students referred through various retention programs, early alert programs, Leading Edge, Back on Track, and other offices to the Tutoring-Learning Center because of serious academic challenges, and provide them with success strategies; set an academic success plan or process in motion; and refer them to additional resources such as TIMS tutoring, Writing Lab, Disability Services, Counseling Center, Career Services or Advising Office if needed
• Developing and presenting workshops and credited classes on academic success strategies and campus resources
• Assist with tutor training across TLC programs – Train tutors on how to equip their learners with effective study skills
• Hiring, training, observing, evaluating, securing and managing the budget for, and maintaining personnel files for Praxis Lab
• Publicizing TLC services by distributing information and speaking or presenting to students, faculty members and groups
• Other duties as assigned
20% Academic Skills Specialist – Working with the TIMS Program
• Teaching credited tutor-training courses for the TIMS program
• Intake and check-in for individual TIMS tutor request forms
• Assist the TIMS Coordinator with TIMS tutor observations and feedback
• Assist in the marketing of the TIMS program
• Other duties as assigned

10% Technology Tutoring Coordinator
• Hiring, training, observing, evaluating and maintaining personnel files for technology tutors while maintaining quality control within the technology tutoring program
• Preparing annual SGA subsidy proposal and overseeing the expenditure of funds provided by SGA
• Other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
• Master’s Degree, or terminal degree, by September 2017, in Education or a closely related discipline
• Experience teaching, preferably at the post-secondary level
• Supervisory experience
• Excellent interpersonal skills
• Excellent communication and organizational skills
• An understanding of the needs of at-risk students
